Where can I go wild camping?

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Here are my wild camping top tips for finding a location.

Where to wild camping.

Scotland and Dartmoor National Park

These are two obviously places because they are legal places to wild camp.

Pros - sleep with peace of mind you will not be woken up by a warden

Cons - both at extreme ends of the UK

Snowdonia & The Lake District

As a general rule, wild camping is tolerated in both Snowdonia and the Lake District.

Pros - Mountains, tarns in the Lake District

Cons - Weather can be unpredictable, difficult to get to for most people

Peak District

Due to recent events where many people have been asked to move on I think it would be a good idea not to wild camp in the Peak District in 2021.

Pros - Easy to get to, hills rather than mountains

Cons - Patrolled regularly

Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, Brecon Beacons, South Downs, Exmoor and Lincolnshire Wolds

These locations are less popular for wild campers but still offer some exceptional locations. They are less well known so finding that perfect place may take a bit of research. However, you may be safer wild camping here because they are not overrun by tourists quite like the main national parks.

Pros - Various locations that are accessible, hills rather than mountains

Cons - Lower levels may not give you the same feeling as being up high but the scenery can still be stuinning.
